Spice colours and flavours introduce a ‘bite’, a sense of exoticism, redolent of the colour and warmth of the Middle and Far East. Cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, saffron, cloves and nutmeg are not just lovely flavourings and aromatic delights but fantastic colours to use in furnishings, as painted finishes and in textiles.

There’s nothing wrong with using a piece of whole spice or a spoonful of ground spice as the inspiration for wall colours, and especially for a glazed finish.

To ‘spice something up’ means to add gusto and zest, to create a lift–and any of these sharper colours will do just that for a tired room.
