Mountain goats produce the finest and softest hair, due to their need to survive in extremely harsh conditions. The hair under the chin and under the bellies, close to the skin and growing in a tight, thick fleece beneath a second longer coat–the guard hair–is the best quality, producing the shatoush and pashmina fibres–or cashmere.

Mountain goat floor rugs can be long haired and and wiry- the essential guard air is not so comfortable to walk over barefoot, as say sheepskin, but very beautifully coloured.
