A scientific theory developed by James Lovelock in the 1960’s, suggesting that the earth and everything on it belong to natural cycles that work in balance: one thing affects another–karma. Gaia or Gaea was the Greek goddess of the earth.
The textile industry employs almost 20% of the world’s population, making us all beneficiaries with a responsibility to consider the effect of our purchases on the natural world: on soil, re-growth, energy, recycling and in equal measure on the communities of craftsmen and labourers who daily supply us with such beautiful fabrics.
Waste is a new phenomenon, of this age. It is therefore for us to look for simple ways of reducing waste in our lifestyles, such as recycling, buying vintage and re-using perfectly good materials. Our effort ‘from the cutting room floor’ is a inspirational starting point.
