Cassis is both a place and a drink: the place a French commune just east of Marseilles. And the drink, a liqueur more correctly Crème de Cassis is a sweet deeply red licquer made from blackcurrants. It would be neat if Crème de Cassis was made in Cassis, and the former incarnation ‘ratafia de cassis’ may well have been, but the drink we know now is mostly made in Burgundy. Creme de Cassis de Dijon, for example, confirming the importance of terroir to designate quality and consistency.
