A Mediterranean plant, Acanthus spinosas with striking leaves and spikey purplish-white flowers that have been used for millennia in decoration. In architecture, best known as the carved ornament on the capital of the Corinthian column, which has in turn inspired woven and printed textile designs, especially damask motifs.
