Long pile carpeting works as well in a bedroom as by a fire, but can become a bit scruffy–so they need to be shaken or raked to keep their looks. One of our most successful was a grey wool, not too long or too thick, pile that exactly matched the flagstones beneath. It almost covered the floor, changing the walk and the atmosphere without really changing the room.
