A beginner’s exercise in hand embroidery, usually the alphabet, mottos or ornamental motifs worked on canvas and signed and dated. Previously, this would have been an important part of a young girl’s education, she would spend hours with a needle making up samplers to practice, hone and demonstrate her skills, in preparation for making the trousseau. Such surviving pieces are often exquisite pieces of textile art and highly collectable.
