The Gunny sack is an inexpensive hessian–or burlap–bag made of jute, kenaf, hemp or sisal, this is used to transport grain, potatoes and grains. These flour sacks, grain sacks, coffee sacks, are re-used again and again perhaps as sandbags, on farms and in the building yard until they have worn out. And then they’re quite good for lining ponds, helping to balance the compost heap and stabilising soil banks.
The natural fibres keep food fresh, are totally biodegradable, inexpensive to make and are totally environmentally friendly from beginning to end.
