An acid etching process whereby fabric is removed by carefully applying acid to the surface–either to create the pattern or to remove a set of acid-reactive yarns. It is often used to reduce and remove the pile of velvet, leaving a translucent, semi-sheer ground cloth that forms a background sub-pattern.
