From the Latin meaning ‘across the sea’, it describes a vibrant, intense blue with a high lustre. Ultramarine is a natural pigment derived from the ground lapis lazuli stone mined in what is now Afghanistan. Although still very much in use today, and prized above all other blues, since the 19thC is more commonly available as a synthetic pigment.
