A single thread or yarn, or one of a set that together makes up a rope or cord or knitting wool, etc. For example: an embroidery skein usually has 6 strands, each of which can be used alone or in smaller multiples; four-ply knitting wool has four strands that can be used. A strand of hair is just one hair.
