Describes any weave or embroidery, lacework, crochet or knitting with a pattern or make up that creates holes of any shape, form or size. Open worked textiles are primarily used to allow light through, but in such a manner as to filter or semi obscure it, whilst showing and endorsing the creative labour – as with lace or broderie anglais, or to present the material in a new way, say in the case of, usually leather or wool, punched, slashed or pierced in any manner.
