1. Dried grasses, clover or herbs can be used for stuffing straw mattresses – palliase, which are much softer than straw, though not as durable as horsehair. Inexpensive, easy to change each summer, together they have a delightful scent; as stuffing mattresses is a bit of a performance in this day and age they’re not practical year long, but worth considering for holiday environments.
2. Hay and straw bale construction, alongside rammed earth, mud bricks and cob, is an age-old building technique.
3. Hay bales make fun country outdoor seating in dry weather–just cover them with wool blankets or skins.
