In design, to ‘get your eye in’ is to become aware: to look, to educate the eye and to read and research what is current, where trends have come from, where they are going, what sort of things will last and what will become fads. Spend time visiting museums, galleries and exhibitions, rural, antique and international fairs, read magazines and explore contemporary crafts, fashions and traditions in both areas of wealth and of poverty.
By watching, looking, reading, talking and understanding, you develop an ‘eye’–you don’t have to like everything, but in order to push boundaries, find your own confidence and style you need sure ground. There are people who seem to have innate good taste, but for most this is something has been learned intuitively, perhaps without realising it, whether from the cradle then honed throughout life.
