Also known a fil-à-fil, its French name, it is essentially a plain weave in two colours. Traditionally, one of the colours was white, which has the effect of diluting the other.
The result is a half tone of the darker colour. Where white is not used it is usually replaced with a lighter tone of the darker colour, still keeping the basic concept of creating a half tone.
