Henequen is the fibre of Agave fourdroydes, native to southern Mexico and Guatemala, naturalised in Costa Rica and the islands and extensively grown for it’s fibre yield in eastern Mexico, specifically Yucatan, Veracruz and Tomaulipas.
Mexican-born Spanish naval engineer Jose Mari Lanz studied the usefulness of the plant material to make ropes and other naval utensils and documented the merits of henequen in Yucatán in 1783.
