Also known as sinopia, it is a deep red-brown natural earth pigment derived from ferric oxide, used in classical antiquity, and particularly associated with Italian medieval and Renaissance art, especially for cartoons and fresco under-paintings.
This pigment was mined since antiquity in Asia Minor, and was exported to Europe via the town of Sinop.
