Silica is a naturally occurring quartz mineral and a major ingredient in glass and ceramics manufacture–in powder form it is capable of absorbing a large amount of moisture. When working on a house that is damp, or that has a damp wall, we attach a small bag of silica gel behind curtain headings and hems to take the moisture away from the fabric.

It’s also useful in bathroom and utility areas, or anywhere close to steam.
