The osier is a species of the multi-stemmed willow Salix viminalis, a small tree grown in wet habitats specifically for coppicing. Multiple long straight and flexible stems grow from the head of the trunk; these withies are used for basket making. In the UK the drainage rines that criss cross the Somerset levels are lined with osiers, providing the raw material to the local basket makers that still weave their products by hand.
