The Genoese, from Genoa in  Northen Italy, have been making velvet since the 14thC. Genoa velvet is gauffraged–in which large patterns are embossed by press-relief printing the velvet fabric with inscribed copper cylinders, crushing the velvet in very lovely patterning.

The fabric which came to be denim fabric was also originally woven in Genoa.
