American quilting is legendry and no less is the work of Gees bend,        which was brought to prominence through an exhibition which toured America in the early 2000’s and then again at the Smithsonian in 2006. Gees Bend is small, rural, cotton planting community nestled ion a curve in the Alabama river from where the women have been making their distinctive, strong geometric quilts for at least six generations. Each quilt top is made by the quilter working alone, reflecting their own vision and contemplation; the padding, backing and quilting stitches are then worked within the community , small groups working and sharing together..
